Jesse brings a wealth of valuable experience, a humming dynamo of energy, and a deep love of community to our institution. In her presentation to the executive board, she said:

After the recent election, I made a vow that I would activate, and find meaningful and impactful work. The environment and education are the areas I feel deeply compelled to support.  The power of teaching kids through direct contact with nature coupled with explorative play and guided inquiry, is what I believe makes Biocitizen such a potent antidote to the state of education and society right now. I am certain that this type program is needed and will be embraced by the parents in Northeast LA (Echo Park, Silverlake, Atwater Village, Highland Park, Los Feliz, etc.) I see great potential for expanding Biocitizen LA because this type of experience for the kids is essential, especially at this time. Our planet needs thinking and feeling stewards. I would love to be the person who brings the mission of Biocitizen to Los Angeles.

I feel that I am uniquely poised expand Biocitizen in LA and I know first hand that the interest is there, and how this community works and thinks, and know how to get things done in this city.

As the mother of a boy who has spent all of his academic life in the public schools of Los Angeles, I have witnessed apathy, and shared with fellow parents our dismay at the lack of environmental exposure and the absence of rigor around critical thought and contextual learning, therefore I am so grateful for the opportunity to represent such a unique and necessary idea.  I believe the Echo Park neighborhood, and the Greater Northeast LA area, with it’s diversity of climate, culture, and people could be a perfect launching pad for Biocitizen LA.”

Next week we’ll create our Field Environmental Philosophy itineraries and curricula for Our Place Summer School, and hold an open house to launch the school on Thursday night—and we would love to meet you!

Please join us! Be a part of the founding of LA’s first school of Field Environmental Philosophy!
